It was indeed a sad day for both the families of the students who were killed in Aluu community in Port Harcourt and the nation as a whole on Friday, September 5,2012 . No matter the offence, no one deserved to die the way the students were killed by the indigenes of the community.
It was reported yesterday that Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, was on the boil as students of UNIPORT took to the streets to protest the killing of four students last Friday.
Remains of one of the students
No fewer than 12 houses in Aluu community was set ablaze by the protesting students. More houses would have been burnt but for the arrival of the Joint Security Task Force (JTF). This protest has forced the university authorities to order the closure of the institution indefinitely with a directive for students to vacate the hostels.
The students under the auspices of the South-South and South-East zones of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), had barricaded the busy East-West road, carrying placards, this caused traffic gridlock on the road which leads to other South-South states.
Also some of the suspects arrested at Omuokiri village in Aluu community in connection with the murder have been arraigned before the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt yesterday. We hope justice takes its course.
May their souls rest in perfect peace and God give the families the fortitude to bear the loss.
