A teacher flogs a 12-year-old pupil to death..

A 12-year-old pupil of a secondary school in Awka, Anambra State, Miss Chidimma Ukachukwu, has died after she was allegedly flogged by her teacher for failing to do her homework.
A reliable source in the school told the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka on Tuesday that the girl died on Thursday last week after she was flogged.

Suspected Terror scare: Arik passengers grab man mid-air



Passengers and crew of an Abuja-bound aircraft belonging to Arik Air were thrown into panic on Tuesday, 23rd Ocotber,2012 when a passenger behaving in a strange manner stood up and screamed Allahu Akbar(God is great) midair.

The scared passengers, who took off from Maiduguri, Borno State, rushed to the strange passenger identified as Aminu Galadima, grabbed him and searched him to ascertain if he had a bomb strapped to his body.

Senate demands dismissal of Arunma Oteh as SEC’s boss

Senate, yesterday, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to sack Ms. Aruma Oteh, Director-General, Security and Exchange Commission, SEC, saying it would not have anything to do with the commission if she remained the head. It also threatened not to screen members of the commission’s board.

Update on Aluu Killings


The police on Thursday said the policeman involved in the killing of the four students of the University of Port Harcourt in Aluu, Rivers State, Sergeant Lucky Orji, had been dismissed from the force.

The spokesman for the police in Rivers, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam confirmed to our correspondent in Port Harcourt that Orji had been dismissed and that he was among the 13 suspects arraigned in court on Wednesday.

Further to the gruesome murder of  four students of University of Port Harcourt, the Magistrate’s Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Wednesday remanded the 13 suspects arrested in connection with the killing of these four students.

Update on Aluu 4 killings; Suspects arrested!!

After two weeks of the gruesome murder of the four students of University of Port Harcourt, thirteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the killings. The suspects will be arraigned in court today.This was made known in Port Harcourt yesterday by Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr Muhammed Ndabawa.

 Those paraded included the traditional ruler of Omokiri village, Alhaji Hassan Welewa, Lawal Segun, Lucky Orji, Cynthia Chinwo, Ekpe Daniel, George Nwadei, Gabriel Oche and Ozioma Abajuo.
 Others were Chigozie Evans Samuel, Endurance Edet, Uwem Sampson Akpabio, David Chinasa Ugbaje and Ikechukwu Louis Amadi (alias Kapoon).

The IGP stated that the police were making efforts to arrest the culprits. He mentioned that after the incident, the Police immediately launched an investigation leading to the arrest of Alhaji Hassan Welewa, the traditional ruler of Omukiri Community, Aluu. Eighteen others, some of whom are members of the vigilante group of the community were also arrested.

Pension probe: Senate uncovers N3bn in illegal account

Senate joint committee on establishment, states and local governments, yesterday, uncovered an illegal account with the United Bank for Africa, UBA, holding N3 billion belonging to the Police Pension Office.
The committee’s finding, while probing the management of police pension fund, showed that the N3 billion was deposited in the account on the same day it was opened under the name of Adamu Salihu and DG (director general).

Pension Scam: Release us from prison, Perm Sec, five others beg court

Having spent five days at Kuje Prison, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Atiku Abubakar Kigo and five others, accused of diverting N32.8billion from the Nigeria Police Pension Funds, have approached the trial Abuja High Court at Gudu, begging it to temper justice with mercy and allow them to go back to their families.

It will be recalled that Kigo, alongside his alleged accomplices were on Thursday sent to prison by trial Justice Abukakar Talba shortly after they pleaded not guilty to a 16-count criminal charge that was preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Meanwhile, hearing on the substantive case against them has been fixed for May 28.

Luxury bus robbery: ‘I was saved by menstrual period’

FIFA President, Sepp Blatter has hailed Fabrice Muamba's recovery following a cardiac arrest as a "miracle".

Cocaine, heart disease contributed to Houston's drowning, Coroner says


Whitney Houston died from an accidental drowning in a hotel bathtub, but the "effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use" were contributing factors in her death, the Los Angeles County coroner said in an initial autopsy report released Thursday.
Houston, 48, was "found submerged in bathtub filled with water" and "no trauma or foul play is suspected," the coroner said in a one-page release.
The 60% narrowing of her arteries "suggest a cardiac event complicated by the cocaine use" led to Houston's slipping underwater, Harvey said.
